Program Overview
The 2009 Iowa City Summer Arts Residency is split into two sessions:
- If You Build It: Guerilla Art Installations and Scavenger Hunt
June 15 – June 27
We will use the majority of two weeks to plan/construct outdoor installations/performances/happenings in publicly accessible locations. Participants can work collaboratively or individually, and there will be a brief organizational meeting on the 15th for all participants to meet and present initial concepts and location ideas. The final presentation of these projects will take the form of an art scavenger hunt in which viewers/audience experience the work by following a map of the installation locations on June 26 (rain date Saturday June 27). - Puppet Workshop Intensive
July 6 – July 11
We will make our own puppets, build theaters, collaborate, work on creating narrative and sound scoring. Collaboration among participants and all forms of puppet and narrative are highly encouraged. A showing of works in progress will be held Saturday July 11th at the Burford Gallery, 109 River Street, Iowa City, IA.
Studios and Facilities
At this time, the Iowa City Summer Arts Residency can only provide large common space for the artists to work in, located at 109 River Street. The two large work rooms function as space to collaborate and exhibit work. Due to the fluid work boundaries and the public nature of the residencies themselves, individual studios become unnecessary and in fact hinder the mission of the ICSA Residency.
